The explosion was caused by the failure of a weld in one of the
ship's boilers. The blast rocked the ship during the early morning
hours after the ship docked in Florida. The accident was attributed
to a failure of adequate care in the maintenance, operation and
inspection of the ship’s boilers, according to the The National
Transportation Safety Board . Rear Admiral Robert Branham,
Commander of the Seventh Coast Guard District stated that “the
boiler explosion aboard the S.S. Norway was a preventable
tragedy."
